As soon as the sun had set in the western sky, Ehlena had risen and dressed in a formal white silk robe, her hair down around her shoulders just as it had been that day long ago but far too soon in coming. She gathered the flowers she had chosen from the florist and delivered to her mated room by Fritz as soon as they had arrived.
She kissed her hellren softly and whispered. "I'll be back soon. If you wish to join me you know where I'll be," she said and tossed her atoms to the wind.

The stars were beginning to poke holes in the velvet of the night sky when she appeared in a field beneath an ancient oak tree that overlooked the city. Looking around she took a deep breath of the cooling air as she made her way to the stone bench that resided in the center of the meadow.
Her bare feet left little evidence of her passing a she crossed the new grass.
Tears had already formed and fallen to her cheeks before she stepped onto the small marble slab.
Ehlena gathered her robes and sat down on the black marble bench.
"Happy mahmen's day. I still miss you. I will always miss you. I.. wanted you to meet my hellren.. I wanted you to see your first grandyoung..I ..wanted to hold your hand one more time.. I wanted you to wrap your arms around me and let me cry when my heart was broken. I..." she swallowed hard, "I would not bring you back from your reward for anything, though.

"I would so love to hear you laugh again. Father always said that my laugh reminded him of you when you were first mated," she smiled and laid one flower down on the white marble beneath her feet. "You would laugh quietly with me in the middle of the day when I was awake WAY beyond my bed time and we'd dance and laugh until I fell asleep in your arms," she whispered and put another flower down.
"You showed me what being a true female of worth was by example," another flower was placed on the others.
"You stood up to father when he was all about appearances with the Glymera when I wore that bright blue dress to the winter formal. You told him that it was perfectly acceptable and regardless of what the other's thought I wasn't their daughter and I was not displaying NEARLY as much of my body as the other females were, so he could just march right back to his study and stay there if he wasn't going to be supportive," she chuckled and wiped tears and laid another flower on the ground.

"He did just that too, until I was about to leave. He called my name from the study and stopped me from leaving. He looked at you and something passed between you as he crossed the floor to me. From behind his back he produced a string of pearls. I heard you gasp as he fastened them about my neck. "Forgive an old male for stealing your joy," he whispered to me as he gave me one of his rare hugs. My eyes met yours and you were smiling and crying quietly, mahmen. You taught me with that one simple act that it's okay to stand up for what you believe in," she said as she placed a bright yellow daisy on the growing pile of flowers.
"You supported my decision to take nursing classes. With out those I wouldn't have been able to take care of Father or meet my heart, Rehvenge." she smiled as she placed a deep purple rose at her f__t.

"You taught me to think for myself, to love without limits and conditions and to never ever be anyone other than myself, glymera be damned. To be a female of worth starts with knowing yourself and loving yourself in all your facets and shades. I can only hope that you are watching from the Fade and you are proud of me mahmen. I know I have made monumental mistakes. I know I have let you down. But among the mistakes and the let downs, I hope I have done some things right.. Not correct at times but right.. and you taught me that right is right.. correct isn't always so..I love you mahmen," she said as she laid the last flower, a brilliantly white orchid with a deep purple center on the top of the chaos of color at her feet.
Standing up she looked down at the city from the quiet hilltop sheltered by the oak. A capricious breeze lifted her hair from her shoulders as it passed. Drying her face she turned to make the short walk back to the oak. With a touch to the gnarled back she took a deep breath and dematted away.
