Her final thoughts last night before being absorbed into candy necklaces and then work at the Mask were still rotating around in her mind. It was all too true, even after much thought and consideration. Only a couple years ago, she thought she was content with her life. She figured she had as many friends as she was going to have and they were as close to family as she would get. Fast forward to now and she was mated and desperately in love. She knew her mother and was building a solid relationship with Autumn. Now, she had a step-sire, for crying out loud. Her closest female friend was classy and beautiful, the complete opposite of herself. The Brothers and their shellans were quickly becoming friends, or more like family, to her. Even the Chosen were counted among her friends.
As a sympath, she'd figured that her future was laid out already. Live in quiet, in secret, work security at the Mask, make sure Rehv didn't kill himself. Seemed simple and easy enough. Complications were the last thing she had wanted and sometimes was still overwhelmed by them. But as she sat in her office in the Mask, the music booming in the background, she realized that she wanted the complications, wanted the tangled web of family that had sucked her in.
It hadn't been something she'd thought too much about, so many other things had needed her attention. But last night, as she'd sat with Marissa and the young, making childish candy necklaces and found that she had been enjoying it, she'd realized her life had changed drastically and yet so slowly, she hadn't actually marked the changes. It left her shaken now, as she sat alone, contemplating her life as it was. Then she realized that what surprised her most was wanting those relationships, the part of her that shrugged and said "oh, well, this is our life now, get used to it." Snorting, she leaned back in her chair and smiled. She'd never understood the saying that life was a roller coaster, but now, she understood perfectly.
