Marissa had just put the house phone back in her pocket as she walked passed her open office door. Stopping she backed up a couple of steps and tilted her head as she peeked inside and smirked, seeing a little blonde young with curls bouncing at the end of her long hair.
The young stood on her toes and poked at Marissa's diamond solitaire earrings she had removed and laid on her desk during a phone call. Butch had purchased them for her birthday two years ago. They were stunning at three carats, in a princess cut, set in platinum. She had always loved pretty things. Did she need them? No. But she did have a fond appreciation for them.
The way the girls small fingers inched forward to grab at the earrings made her smile, even more so when she pulled them back quickly...as if deciding it probably wasn't a good idea.
Marissa moved forward and leaned on the door jamb, crossing her arms over her chest. Taking breath, "You like pretty baubles don't you?"
The young jerked back and whipped her head around, her eyes wide with fear. She stood before Marissa with her mouth open trying to say something but it wouldn't come out. She linked her fingers together and placed them behind her back, rocking on her heels. "I...I ran passed and the light caught them. I wasn't going to take them Miss Marissa. I swear. I just wanted to see them. They are really shiny."
Marissa smiled and her eyes softened, "I didn't think you were going to take them. You only wanted to see. I remember doing the exact same thing with my Mahmen's jewelery when I was a young." Tilting her head, Marissa walked forward and knelt down to her level. "Tell me, it seemed to have slipped my mind, what is your name little one?"
The little girl smiled, "My name is Sarah, Miss Marissa."
Taking in a breath of awe she placed a hand over her heart, "Such a pretty name for a pretty girl. Let me see your ears."
Sarah's eyes went wide as Marissa asked to see her ears. She slowly raised her hands and pulled her hair back from her face and shoulders, exposing her small ears. "I have my ears pierced too. Mahmen said it will be easier for me while I am young then once I'm like you."
Marissa nodded, "Your Mahmen is exactly right, there is more preparation for such things after you transition. You'll find many things are much simpler when you are young." She smiled and tucked Sarah's hair behind her ears and picked up one of her earrings removing the back. "Which is why...I like for all of the young under the roof of Safe Place to be just that...young. Young and carefree." She placed one earring in Sarah's right ear, then picked up the other and did the same to the left.
Sarah stood very still not wanting the earrings to fall out of her ears. They were much heavier than any earrings she'd worn before.
Marissa leaned over and pulled a small hand mirror from her desk top and held it in front of Sarah, "Now, Sarah you cannot have these because mine hellren gave them to me as a gift, but just see if you like the way you look."
Sarah gasped and brought her hands up to touch the diamonds sparkling at her earlobes, "They are beautiful." She turned her head from side to side and watched them glint in the low light of Marissa's office. Sarah suddenly scrunched up her nose.
Marissa giggled, "What is that face for?"
"I was just thinking, you said they were from your hellren. I don't want a hellren, because males are gross." Sarah stuck out her tongue.
Marissa laughed and put the mirror down, then began to take the earrings out of Sarah's ears. She placed them back in her own ears and shook her hair out. "Not all males are gross. I love mine hellren dearly. One day you too will find someone to love you the way mine hellren loves me."
She stood and held her hand out for Sarah, "Come Sarah, let us grab a snack and I'll take you to your Mahmen, I believe she is in the library."
