~PreTrans, PreBrotherhood~
He pulled his coat tighter on his body as the wind whipped around him. Wincing as the sun basically pierced his eyes. The sun always hurt his eyes at this time of day. Just because the weather was chill, didn't mean the sunlight didn't burn him. He had to face it, he was weird. Maybe he should have been born an albino with how sensitive his skin was.
The circus, he could join the circus. Then he could at least make money off of bets to see how fast he would burn or how bad the headaches would be. Whatever, he kicked a rock in front of him and heard an "Ouch." He hung his head and knew he had hit someone. He couldn't even shout sorry. He took his hand and cupped it over his eyes shielding them. Then saw a girl jogging over to him. "You okay?"
He started to sign but wasn't sure if she would understand so he mouthed along with it, I'm sorry. Couldn't see
She smiled and shook her head, "it's fine. The sun is bright today. Even I can't see far without turning away. Would you like to sit under the tree with me? It has shade."
He stared at her. Was she serious? No one ever wanted to sit with him. After gaping like a fool he nodded and started walking with her. They reached the bench and sat she turned, "What is your name?"
He signed it, but she shook her head and laughed, "I'm sorry I don't know what that is." He sat for a minute then pulled a twig from the tree and wrote his name in the dirt.
She smiled, "John-Matthew, I like it. It suits you. My name is Emily."
He nodded and ran his foot over the writing in the dirt, then pointed to her and wrote. School here?
"Oh yes, but today is my last day. I move around a lot. My father is in the military. We are moving to Colorado. I'm going to miss it here, but I'm used to moving. I've seen you around, you're kind of a loner aren't you?"
He raised a hand and waved it side to side. He wiped at the dirt and wrote another question, "How old? I'm 11"
She read it and smiled, "I'm 12, ha! I'm older than you." She nudged him in the arm. He laughed and shook his head. She frowned and he looked at her, What?
"Nothing I shouldn't ask." He gave her an exasperated look. What? "Okay, okay...how did you lose your voice?"
He smiled, that was nothing. Everyone asked that. he took the stick and drew again. Born this way.
She frowned, he nudged her and signed OK She nodded and was going to ask another question but a car pulled up to the fence and honked the horn. She jumped up and smiled, "It was nice to meet you John-Matthew. That's my dad. Try to make some friends, you're a cool dude." He smiled and waved at her and watched her walk away. It figures he would finally find someone to talk to him and she had to move the very next day.
He went home that night and thought all about the kindness she showed him, even after he pelted her with a pebble.
The next day he went back to the same tree for recess, because she was right the shade was nice there. When he got there sitting on the bench was a card and a small box. He opened the card and read it.
Dear John-Matthew,
I'm giving you these in hopes you get out there and make some friends. I know the shade is nice here but this will help you walk around some more. Oh, and it will help you see and not hit people with pebbles.
Your Friend,
Emily
He laughed and opened the box, inside nestled in some black foam was a pair of wrap around sunglasses with very dark lenses. He put them on and what do you know...the sun didn't hurt his eyes.
